And finally, we move on to the last stage: an agreement on cooperation. You need to fill out the “Commission Agreement” and related papers. Carefully study their contents before you put your signature! Some points may require discussion. We advise you to pay attention to the following conditions:
How long is the work accepted
How long is the payment after the sale
If the gallery provides a discount, from whose income it is deducted – yours or gallery
What responsibility does the gallery bear in case of damage or theft of work
Is it possible for you to exhibit in other galleries and independently sell your work via the InternetIs it possible to take pictures before the expiration of the period specified in the contract, and under what conditions
Are cash contributions from the author
As an annex to the contract, an “Acceptance and Transfer Act” must be compiled, which indicates the name, year of creation, technique, dimensions and material of the work, as well as the author’s price for it. Fill out the act as detailed as possible and carefully store your copy – this data will be entered into the gallery database, according to this list you will be returned unsold works. If you provide several paintings with the same or very similar names, it is better to rename them so that there is no confusion in the calculation.
After everything is made out – do not disappear!
From time to time you can come to visit in order to make sure that the work is exhibited, and you did not forget to inform about the sale. Keep in touch, show interest and unobtrusively monitor the status of their representatives.
So, what are the benefits of collaboration with galleries for beginners? If your creative biography is not yet rich, and you do not know how to correctly describe the concept of your work, the text will be composed by managers, because sales depend on it. In the future, you can use these materials for self-presentation. In addition, experienced staff will assist you in determining the market value of the work. Undoubtedly, the gallery has a clear strategy for promoting its authors, as well as providing various development opportunities.
What are the downsides? From the obvious – these are interest payments and obligations under the contract. In addition, due to the instability of the Russian art market, even successful galleries are not immune to closure. Nevertheless, if the contract is drawn up with high quality, it’s enough just to keep abreast, and in case of problems you can defend your rights under the law.
Do not be afraid to try, and you will surely succeed!
