Modular panels have become very popular in recent years. But this is not a new invention at all. Moreover, modular art has been around for centuries. The modular picture consists of several separate parts that form a complex composition: sometimes stable, and sometimes not – in some cases, the parts can be interchanged or even completely removed.
The founder of modular art is considered Jerome Bosch, who created, as you know, in the Renaissance: his triptych “Garden of Earthly Delights” is considered the first modular painting in history. This work served as the so-called “variable altar,” and the arrangement of the parts of the painting changed in accordance with the church holidays and the message that parishioners needed to send at certain times of the year. They say that the whole world is a canvas on which we all write. And revolutionaries are those who always write in broad strokes, without paying any attention to those who seek to limit them.
The revolutionary artist uses new color combinations, new styles, but does not lose respect for the basics, and ultimately brings a new sound to all areas of art. Such an artist was Henri Matisse: not just a painter, but a man who generously splashed paints on the whole world of art. Matisse was an innovator, full of ideas, but also actively rethinking the past. His ideas are still reflected in the works of new and new creators. We can say that for many he opened the door to the world of art.
Henri Matisse opened his piggy bank with ideas and showed them to the world at the turn of two centuries, at the time of the flourishing of Art Nouveau. Brute art or art brut is often confused with the so-called art of outsiders. But if art brut is rather “art of the crazy”, then outsider art is a broader concept.
It can be the art of people without special art education, the work of those who find themselves in difficult life situations. The term art – brut was introduced in 1972 by art critic Roger Cardinal. Similar phenomena are marginal art, naive art, visionary or intuitive art, folk art, new fiction.
Perhaps the main difference between the creators – “outsiders” from other artists, is the conditions in which they work. Diseases, loneliness, severe external circumstances, such as war, push artists – “outsiders” to amazing creative impulses. A striking example of outsider art, of course, are the work of Henry Darger.
